Indian Children Of Our Native Americans Need Your Support!
OUR MISSION “To help Native American people improve the quality of their lives by providing opportunities for them to bring about positive changes in their communities.” Council Of Indian Nations Who is National Relief Charities? Who serves on your Board of Directors? Are you a non-profit organization? Is my contribution tax deductible? Who do you help? What percentage of what you collect goes to Native Americans? Do you receive any money from the Government? What happens to the money the government allocates for Native Americans? Don’t all Native Americans receive a monthly check from the government? What about the money made from Casino operations? NOTE: November 2008 Caring individuals just like you helped contribute over $6,500 for our online Winter Fuel campaign this year! This combined with our other fundraising efforts will help serve hundreds of Elders in need. Because of you, and others like you, this great program can help Elders get the winter fuel assistance they need. George Denny is a perfect example. George wasn’t always blind; he was blinded by eye surgery about 3 years ago. Now 71, he lives alone and has learned to find his way around his home but he misses a sense of independence. He used to be a mechanic on the Air Force base in Roswell, New Mexico and also repaired vehicles on the Rocky Boy Reservation where he lives. Fortunately, George does have a caretaker who cleans, takes him to the Elder center for hot meals or transports him to his medical appointments. Recently, George acquired a hairline fracture in his shoulder when he fell outside of his home. He has been known to tire of sitting at home and will sometimes venture down the road, but the community knows him and someone always calls his caretaker to pick him up. George still feels that he can be independent and likes doing things for himself. But now, with his blindness, many such chances are gone. George told AIRC's staff that he tried to make his propane last as long as it could. He had learned where the switch was on the furnace and only ran it for 30 minutes a night. The rest of the time he spent in heavy sweatshirts and sweatpants under several blankets. His social security income was only $628 a month, so this Winter Fuel program gave him the opportunity to purchase the fuel he so desperately needed. The support you have given helps a wonderful program assist Elders like George Denny who need it the most. Thank you for all you do!.................................................................
Do you employ Native Americans? Yes, over the years we have had, and currently have, Native Americans from many different tribes employed in our organization. We are an equal opportunity organization and welcome people of all races. Do Native Americans have to stay on the reservations? No, many leave to seek work off the reservation to help support their families that remain on the reservation; however, the importance of family, the remoteness of many of the reservations and the lack of transportation make it very difficult for many Native Americans to leave the reservation. Many families remaining on the reservations combine their resources in order to stay together. How can I adopt a Native American child? Most tribes do not allow their children to be adopted outside the tribe. The extended family holds great importance within their culture so children usually remain within their extended family.
